Trends that Keep us Awake at Night

The field of advancement has never been static, and never will be.

That part we know. Yet, in recent years there have been some trends that may be cause for pause and reflection. We will begin this session by looking at some recent trends within higher education that may change ways that we think and plan. Time will be allowed for others to suggest trends and/or reflections not mentioned in my presentation. The hope is that during this first hour of the conference we will create a frame for thinking about many of the topics to be discussed over our two-day meeting.

Bill Laramee

Vice President for Alumni and College Relations Berea College

POWERPOINT PRESENTATION

10:45 AM to 12:00 PM         Session One

PHILANTHROPY: LEADERSHIP IS A COVENANT

Increasingly Advancement Professionals are being called on to lead.  This happens as these professionals are quite adept at completing tasks and achieving goals.  However, there is more to leadership than tasks and goals.  As the organization’s needs grow, so too does the need for leaders who can influence and engage staff and volunteers alike in achieving a common purpose.  A covenant is a relationship of mutual respect, commitment and trust in which two or more people are willingly bound together by a common and ethical purpose.  Covenants are dynamic and powerful because they are based on relational principles that when present free people both to lead and follow more effectively.

PRESENTER:   Dr. Leonard J. Moisen, Ph.D., President, The Covenant Group, Louisville, KY

MODERATOR:  Kay Yates

ADVANCEMENT SERVICES: STEWARDSHIP: WHY HAS THE PROCESS OF SAYING 'THANK YOU' TO OUR DONORS BECOME SO COMPLEX?

I heard that it is written somewhere that we should thank our donors seven times over the course of a year to effectively steward their gifts.  Are you really counting?  Is there a point at which the rate of return declines?  Perhaps it happens the eighth time we say thank you.  During this session we will share ideas of how we may steward our donors and we’ll discuss the complexity of managing a successful stewardship program which crosses over many boundaries within your institution.  Bring examples of how your school provides stewardship to your donors to share with your colleagues.

COMMUNICATIONS: PUTTING A FACE ON IT! CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS PLANNING

College and university campuses continue to encounter crises with more frequency.  In the wake of a crisis, effective communication is critical in relating the position of the institution. When handled poorly, communication can tarnish and in some instances permanently damage the image of the institution. When handled effectively, communication can turn an anxious moment into an opportunity to advance the mission and vision of the institution in the eyes of the public and to maintain and enhance the public trust. This session introduces participants to the process of designing, updating, implementing and evaluating an institution-specific crisis communications plan.
